In this copy of the Budget, Shay Gap plays Goldsworthy at Shay Gap.

The team that played against Goldsworthy Tigers is made up of Brian Cruesot, Les Bonakey, Rhett Wilkinson, Ray Masters, Andre Lusan, Doug Beard, Peter Calutti, Bill Cooke, Jim Hinton, Kevin Regan, Ray Sparks, Rex Garlett, Wayne Cross, John Nani, Darryl Kernaghan, John McArthur, Jeff Ashworth, Ray Gray, Ron Ranger, Frank Cruden, Doug Moon, Charlie Dunn.

The Budget describes Shay Gap’s loss to Rovers in the previous week, “the Hawks were far from disgraced.  After a great first quarter the Hawks collapsed in the second quarter and although there were some unusual decisions by the field umpire, the Rovers were far too good and were clear leaders at half time.”

“Some fine individual performances by McArthur, Bonakey, and Cruden were noticeable while the whole back line played soundly with Masters and Briggs prominent.  Even though the Hawks were beaten by 54 points the scores didn’t indicate the closeness of the game and they continued to play the game out fully.  I must mention a brilliant game from full-forward John Nani who kicked 9 majors out of 11 which speaks for itself.  To sum up a good omen for the future.”

Final scores:  Rovers 20.15 defeated Hawks 11.12

Best players:  Hawks; Bonakey, Cruden, McArthur, Masters, Nani, Cooke.

Leading Goalkickers for the De Grey League:  J. Nani (SG) 62; P. Love (R) 56; R. Garlett (SG) 31; P White (R) 28; K Langlands (SH) 27.

LOCAL NEWS:  A certain President of ours was looking very fragile at last weeks game.  The story floating around is that he went to the races and after doing his money went to the Motel for a reviver.  Apparently, he forgot to tell his X mates where he was going and they left him there.  He was seen talking to an Actor and also a woman well sunburnt.  The story that he was seen at a club just outside of Hedland was denied !!!!!!!!!

Editor note: Although this copy of the Shay Gap Football Club Budget is undated, I put the year at 1975.  Shay Gap did really well in its first season.  They were second on the ladder most of the year.  Rovers were just too good winning the premiership in 1975 and then went on to win 1976 and 1978.  Also the fact that a copy is in Colin Matheson’s collection says that he went to the match, and I remember going with him.
