The Black Rock Stakes had a record set by Goldsworthy Football Club by winning the race in 5 hours, 41 minutes in 1973
It was an annual event from Goldsworthy to Port Hedland, a 74 mile wheelbarrow race.
Goldsworthy Tigers entered a ten-man team who achieved the record time by changing every 30 seconds. In the last 17 miles they sprinted an average time of less than 4 minutes a mile – pushing a wheelbarrow. The average speed was 13 miles per hour over a mostly unsealed road. Only the last 25 miles was sealed.
An amazing feat by some of the Pilbara’s most talented footballers.
