Finucane Island 1967-1986

Finucane Island

Finucane Island Football Club was formed by Wally Podmore, Doug O’Brien and Norm Bradbury in 1967.

The team colours were originally green and gold, and changed to Essendon colours black and red later on.

The club joined the De Grey Football Association on 13 April 1969, and was the first to appoint a woman club official in 1973.

Unfortunately the club never won a premiership and disbanded in 1986.

  1. Fond memories , i played 2 seasons for Finucane. I think i was the 1st fly in fly out Footballers in the Pilbara. !982. Final year was 1983. The Club closed down the same year.Played for Port Hedland Rovers !984 – !986 along with a lot of players destroyed my body playing up their.

  2. I believe the club disbanded for a while during this period. While I was there 1977-1981 they reformed and competed as a b grade side until 1979 in that year losing only two games for the season the second being the grand final, the following year they competed in the A grade and struggled, getting in the record books for all the wrong reasons.

    1. I played a couple years there I’m sure it was 87 and 88 miss all my childhood friends from there…. Happy times in my life
